Recycled Content Overview

GreenCircle’s Recycled Content certification demonstrates an organization’s commitment to reuse materials in an effort to support circular economy as well as reduce its reliance on virgin materials.

The Recycled Content certification was developed to evaluate the source of recycled content raw materials to determine their pre-and post-consumer designations.

Products certified by GreenCircle Recycled Content may be recognized by Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly (CPF) program, which highlights products with trusted certifications that meet sustainability standards.

Accreditation
& Industry Recognition

The Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) recognizes GreenCircle Certified as an APR-recommended certification body that meets APR’s criteria and complies with the APR post-consumer recycled content (PCR) certification standard.


Eligible Products

Includes but not limited to:

  • Durable goods made of plastics and/or metals (e.g., toys, organization/storage, tools)

  • Paper tableware (e.g., cups, plates)

  • Paper stationary (e.g., sticky notes, printer paper, greeting cards)

  • Glassware

Minimum Criteria

  • Product must meet ≥1% recycled content to receive GreenCircle certification.

Data Requirements

  • Product bill of material/recipe.

  • 12 months of total production, raw material purchase, and raw material usage data for the manufacturing of the product.

  • Contact information of current recycled content material suppliers and sample purchase orders.

  • A recycled content certification or an attestation from each recycled content raw material supplier, verifying the pre- and post-consumer content.

  • Site visit — GreenCircle Certified will determine if this requirement will be met through an on-site or virtual visit.

Certification Framework

GreenCircle’s Recycled Content certification demonstrates an organization’s commitment to reuse materials in an effort to support circular economy as well as reduce its reliance on virgin materials. The guideline provides details on the certification process and methodology for GreenCircle Certified Recycled Content Certification. GreenCircle will conduct the audit for Recycled Content Certification in accordance with the requirements and methods set forth in the audit plan and in GreenCircle’s Certification Scheme which is in alignment with ISO17065:2012.

Timeline

Completion of the standard certification process takes approximately 75 business days.

Eligibility for Amazon Climate Pledge Friendly must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Non-electronic products must contain ≥50% recycled content (does not include packaging)

  • Electronic products must meet category-specific thresholds
